– A power supply (5 volts is plenty for this project) – A breadboard – Jumper wires – An NPN transistor (we used a 2N2222A) – A 1 kΩ resistor – A 10 kΩ resistor
– A 100 kΩ resistor – A pushbutton switch Instructions:
1. Start by soldering the positive lead of your power supply to the anode (+) of the first LED in your strip. Then, solder the negative lead of your power supply to the cathode (-) of the last LED in your strip. This will complete the circuit and allow current to flow through all of the LEDs in your strip.
2. Next, connect one leg of your pushbutton switch to ground (GND). Then, connect one leg of your transistor (we used an NPN 2N2222A) to ground as well. Finally, connect one leg each of your three resistors (1kΩ, 10kΩ, 100kΩ)to ground as well.
These components will create a voltage divider that we’ll use later on in our circuit. 3. Now, it’s time to build the actual flashing circuit itself! Connect the other leg of your pushbutton switch directly to 5V+. This will be our input signal that turns on the flashing effect when we press down on the button. Then, take another jumper wire and connect it from 5V+to the collector pin (C)of your transistor. The middle pin on your transistor is called the base pin (B), so go ahead and connect a jumper wire from there directly into one end of our voltage divider chain (the junction between R1 and R2). Finally, connect another jumper wire from GND directly into the other end of our voltage divider chain(the junction between R2 and R3). 4. That’s it!
